Slotted just below its larger sibling, the GV70 finds itself to be a bit more condensed versus the automaker's first foray into SUVs, the GV80. Nevertheless, it's a perfect fit in a segment that has been experiencing rapid growth over the past decade, driven by consumers who are actively purchasing new vehicles. The GV70 also happens to scale down the GV80's proportions to be a bit more manageable and sporty--all while retaining the same muscular powerplant option under the hood.
© via GenesisThe America-bound GV70 will offer two engine configurations: a 300-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and a more powerful 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Separating the two is exactly one liter of displacement and an extra turbocharger on the V6 application. Some non-U.S. models will also see a 2.2-liter diesel, however, Genesis (unsurprisingly) does not appear to have any intention of shipping that package stateside.
We already knew that the GV70 is going to be a handsome package, but it would also appear that Genesis is aiming to build something that also offers a jazzy driving experience without skimping on the luxury experience of the brand. Specifically, the crossover will offer a sport package that instills primarily visual changes, though it does add an additional 'Sport Plus' driving mode to make the most of its rear-wheel-drive-based driving experience.
If equipped, the sport package will accentuate the crossover's brazen appearance with a set of sporty characteristics that Genesis says presents 'a delicate balance between simplicity and flamboyance.' This means modifying the grille, bumper design, molding, and wheels. And the same goes for the retro-future inspired interior which receives a bespoke steering wheel, carbon fiber bits, and unique colors.
© via GenesisSpeaking of the interior, that's where the Genesis is going to shine. Its cockpit is set to be chocked-full of futuristic tech available to drivers, including an all-new fingerprint authentication system and radar-based rear occupant sensors that can detect if an infant is left in the backseat simply by detecting its breathing.
Now, we're not quite sure what the U.S. market will adopt from international vehicles, but browsing the Korean site for the GV70 offers quite a bit of insight into what Genesis might have planned for the GV70. The fingerprint system, for example, may allow drivers to unlock the vehicle, start the engine, access connected services, as well as pay for gas and parking via Genesis CarPay. There's also a 3D gauge cluster with a Rolls-Royce-style reverse tachometer and an infotainment screen which can provide directions using the vehicle's cameras and augmented reality
The GV70 is a perfect example of how Genesis is quickly disassociating from its parent brand's reputation as a former budget brand; a stain which Hyundai has unfairly carried since its U.S. introduction in the late '80s. But by stuffing gobs of technology into the cabin and a moderately powerful twin-turbo engine under the hood, it's easy to forget Genesis' roots--and that's exactly what it needs for the brand to continue thriving.

The newest addition to the Hyundai’s new luxury division will be a 2019 Genesis GV80 SUV. The recently-established luxury line of the Korean manufacturer has three sedans in the offer so far. However, if we consider that crossovers are nowadays one of the most popular segments of the car industry, it is clear what to expect next. Every carmaker, premium or mainstream, needs to have crossovers in their lineups.
The new model from Genesis already came in a concept form, while the company recently confirmed its launch for 2019. According to latest reports, production model shouldn’t be much different. The base shape of the concept will definitely remain, but we will definitely see more production-friendly details on it. So, expect a little bit less spectacular parts such as headlights, taillights, bumpers, grille etc. The concept featured a fuel cell plug-in hybrid powertrain but expect gasoline units as well.
The production 2019 Genesis GV80 SUV will most likely look a little bit less spectacular. The recent concept came with numerous interesting and very attractive design solutions. However, many of them will not find their way to the production model. For example, we are pretty sure that attractive twin-stipe headlights will be replaced with something more conventional. The same thing is expected with taillights. The grille and bumpers will also receive some tweaks. Basically, we should see a more familiar design here. The new 2019 GV80 SUV will borrow many parts from G80 sedan, in order to follow design language of the brand. However, some reports suggest that some of these parts from a concept will be available in a top-range trim level. Of course, those small side mirrors will be replaced with ones of a normal size for sure.
While the exterior design will keep most of the concept’s characteristics, the cabin of production model will definitely feature more significant changes. First of all, serial production models, at least those lower trims, definitely will not feature a four-seat configuration. The new 2019 Genesis GV80 SUV will most likely come in a three-row seat configuration. Also, we should see a little bit different dashboard layout, more similar to one in G80 sedan. Also, you should not expect that luxurious leather/aluminum/ash combination, at least not in base models. The list of hi-tech features should be amazing, but don’t expect such huge touchscreen and a center console that goes all away to rear seats. Basically, the cabin design will be pretty much the same as in G80. Naturally, we will see many new details adapted to the crossover.
As we already mentioned, the concept version features fuel cell plug-in hybrid powertrain. However, there is no specific data for this advanced system. Still, his version could find its way to the serial production. However, we are pretty sure that the new model will come with more conventional sources of power.
The base model will probably feature a familiar 3.8-liter V6, which is good for about 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. Also, we are pretty sure that the new crossover will be available with a V8 unit as well. It is a familiar 5.0-liter engine, which has a max output of 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Both gasoline engines will come in a pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The exact launch date of the new 2019 Genesis GV80 SUV is still unknown, but latest reports suggest second half of the next year. On the other side, we didn’t hear anything about the price. At the moment, we can make some rough prediction. The new crossover will compete with large SUVs like Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7 etc. These models are available somewhere around 70.000 dollars. Despite the fact that Genesis is a premium brand, we believe that Hyundai is willing to continue as a little bit cheaper alternative. So, we can predict that the base 2019 GV80 SUV could cost around 65.000 dollars or something like that.
